This is one of my favourite times of the year – winter has finally arrived, the sun is shining low in a clear blue sky and everything is completely frozen – and the best way to enjoy it? By foot.

You don’t need a dog to enjoy the beauty of the Surrey countryside, although they do add to the enjoyment – you just need to know where to walk. And whether you live in Dorking, Guildford, Woking, Cobham or Weybridge, there are loads of stunning places to walk right on your doorstep.

Our regular excursions, that’s me and my Jack Russell – Fiddle, include walking round Chobham Common, which is the largest National Nature Reserve in the South East, along the River Wey or round the lake at Virginia Water, but my current favourite is Horsell Common. There is a new Wetland Centre run by Horsell Common Preservation Society at Heather Farm with a coffee shop which welcomes dogs. It even has a dog shower outside which has been a life saver with all the mud.

For those new to the area or wanting to spread their wings a bit further, and need some direction, the National Trust have an excellent series of walks, guided and self guided, on their website National Trust Walks.

But you don’t have to live in Surrey to enjoy it – so close to London, come and make a day of it?
